If you feel you may have a gambling problem, we encourage you to contact the NRGP Problem Gambling Counselling Line as soon as possible, before things get any worse.

The NRGP Problem Gambling Counselling Line

The NRGP administrative headquarters and telephone counselling line service is based at its own premises in Kenilworth.

The problem gambling counselling line continues to perform an important function within the problem gambling arena, fielding many varied calls related to the incidence of this phenomenon.

More than 25 740 gambling-specific callers to the toll-free Problem Gambling Counselling Line since inception have received assistance and some 8 795 callers referred for free treatment by the outpatient treatment network – on average about 95 a month. More than 2 818 callers have received assistance telephonically.

There is now a full language capability on the problem gambling counselling line. It has also expanded its services with an International number (+27 21 674 5830), allowing access to the service from neighbouring states.

The problem gambling counselling line team – supervised by Barbara van der Spuy – has increased to six members, in order to provide an effective 24 hour service.

The problem gambling counselling line has established itself as a reputable resource within the treatment community. Monthly statistical reports are produced to monitor trends in the calls and are available for perusal.

Nine-session treatment programme

If you are identified as being a problem gambler and would like further treatment with the problem, the problem gambling counselling line counsellor will refer you to your nearest National Responsible Gambling Programme trained gambling treatment medical professional, who will enrol you in six-session weekly treatment programme. The cost of such treatment will be borne by the National Responsible Gambling Programme.

Inpatient Facilities

In certain cases, patients may be referred to inpatient facilities at hospitals/clinics in Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein or Johannesburg. The National Responsible Gambling Programme may be prepared to assist with the cost of such treatment.

Family counselling service

The NRGP offers a free family counselling service – one to three sessions with a psychologist or social worker - for family members or significant other people affected by problem gambling.
